Fourth of July | Boating Safety and Preparedness

Fireworks are in the air, and that means it’s 4th of July weekend. If you plan to celebrate from Sea to Shining Sea, we can help ensure a safe and successful weekend out on the water with a few safety tips.

1. Test your battery to determine if it has enough power to outlast your weekend-long celebration. The folks at NAPA can help by load testing your battery (varies by location) and setting you up with one that is right for you.

2. Make sure you have enough life jackets for all of your guests. It’s essential to inspect all life jackets to ensure they’re in working order. Over 80% of all boating fatalities are preventable with life jackets.

3. Be prepared for emergencies. Your emergency kit should include flares, a first-aid kit, a fire extinguisher, emergency lighting, water, and distress signaling devices. Inspect all items to ensure they are all in working order and in adequate quantities to accommodate your passengers.

4. File a float plan with a friend who is staying ashore. Your float plan should include a list of who is going, where you are going, what the boat looks like, and when to expect you back. Instruct them what to do if you are not back and unable to check in at the appointed time.

5. Alcohol and boating do not mix. As a pilot, you are responsible for the safety of your passengers. The waterways will see extra traffic this weekend, increasing the chances of boating accidents. You can also expect an increased presence of intoxicated boaters on the waterways. Clear, quick thinking could be the difference to for a safe and enjoyable weekend.

6. Stop by your local NAPA Auto Parts store to get the marine parts and essentials you need to make the most of a memorable Fourth of July weekend.
