Get Ready For Winter: Automotive Checklist

Automotive Winterizing Checklist for Southerners: A No-Snow Survival Guide
Snow chains? What are those? Freezing fluids? Not usually a concern.
Like a lot of things, we do things a bit differently in the South. However, skipping seasonal maintenance can still leave you out in the cold.

TIRES: Start at the Bottom
Your tires are your first line of defense against all weather conditions.
  • Check tire pressure: Ensure it matches the manufacturer’s recommended PSI. Cold weather can cause pressure to drop.
  • Inspect tread depth: Use the penny test—if you can see Lincoln’s entire head, it’s time for new tires.
  • Check for wear: Look for uneven patterns that could signal alignment or suspension issues.
  • Don’t forget the spare: Ensure your spare tire and jack are in good condition before they are called into action.

BRAKES: Stop with Confidence
While checking your tires, give your brakes some love.
  • Inspect brake pads: Remove the tire to get a clear view. If the pad is less than 1/4″ thick, it’s time for a replacement.
  • Test stopping power: Unusual squeaking or grinding noises could indicate worn pads or rotors.

FLUIDS: Keep Things Flowing
Take a moment to check the level, color, and quality of all of your fluids.
  • Oil: Ensure it’s at the right level and avoid exceeding the recommended mileage.
  • Antifreeze: Verify the level and ensure the mix prevents freezing.
  • Windshield washer fluid: Top it off to help keep your windshield clean for long trips.
  • Brake, power steering, and transmission fluids: Check levels and top off as needed.
Not sure what fluids are right for your vehicle? Visit Auto Parts and Supply, your local NAPA store for expert advice.

BATTERY: Careful. The Holidays can be Draining
A weak battery can leave you stranded on a chilly morning.
  • Inspect for corrosion: Clean the terminals and apply a corrosion inhibitor.
  • Test it: Bring your battery to any Auto Parts & Supply, your local NAPA store for a free load test to see if you’re due for a replacement.

BELTS & HOSES: Avoid Surprise Breakdowns
Avert disaster before you hit the road with a quick visual inspection of your belts and hoses.
  • Check belts: Look for fraying, cracks, or glazing.
  • Inspect hoses: Ensure they’re firm and pliable—not soft or mushy.

VISION: Check out the Lights
Clear visibility is critical for safe driving no matter the season.
  • Lights: Test all interior and exterior lights for proper operation.
  • Wipers: Replace blades if they streak, chatter, or leave spots. Consider upgrading to winter blades if your travels bring you north.
